Winter Solstice and the Tarot

May the light of the Winter Solstice always shine upon you.

May all your sorrows vanish, and all your dreams come true this Solstice.

Friends -

The Winter Solstice arrives this year on December 21 at 1:47 Pacific, celebrating the rebirth of creation and symbolizing hope. What do the Tarot and the Winter Solstice have to do with each other?

Three Tarot cards support this turning of the year.

The Star

The Star Tarot card calls us to examine our highest and most transcendent values and to chart our course forward accordingly. It is a reminder of the light that will soon return. Thanks to centuries of humanity navigating land and sea by the stars above, stars (and especially the North Star, Polaris) have come to symbolize guidance. For those who don't subscribe to Christianity, the Star of Bethlehem tells us of a time when looking up to the skies in awe and wonder was part of people's lives, something few of us relate to nowadays. The Winter Solstice in a time for us to rekindle this ancient connection.

Five of Disks - Worry

Regardless of the true nature of wealth and abundance, even many of the monetarily richest of us live in fear that there will never be ‘enough.' When we do the simple math, there are more than enough resources for everyone, but when power is poorly distributed, some people get more than they could ever take advantage of, and many barely scrape by. At this time of year, when the gap is widest between those who have a strong support system and those who do not, broaden your perception. If you have a family to celebrate with and a fire to gather around, how can you share the bounty? Count your blessings and share the abundance.

Princess of Disks

For me, the Princess of Disks embodies the Winter Solstice as we move from the dark back into the light. A Priestess of Demeter, she is ready to bring life back to the grove she stands in. The roots of the forest behind her are green with the promise of spring. Her wand, diamond tipped, is the essence of the basic structure of all carbon-based life. An animal fur cape and a crown of ram's horns connect her to the earth. On the brink of transformation, the Princess of Disks is strong, beautiful, and pregnant with the secret wonder of the future.

I hope these cards expand your heart and understanding this Winter Solstice. I’ve been honored over the years to do readings for so many – is it time to do yours?

How do you know if a Tarot reading is right for you?

  • You're going through a life transition or marking an occasion.

  • You feel disconnected from your intuition.

  • You want to get to the root of an issue to clear it.

  • You're ready to get a new perspective.

  • You're ready to make different choices.

In Elyn’s Diary, we’re exploring our authenticity looking at the 22 Major Arcana cards, looking at each card and some of the questions they invite us to explore. These cards represent universal principles collectively experienced, regardless of our culture or family upbringing, and teach us how, as human beings, we grow, evolve, and deepen. The first eleven:

The Fool: What does my heart tell me?

The Magus: How do I tell my truth?

The Priestess: How do I trust my intuition?

The Empress: How do I nurture?

The Emperor: How do I lead?

The Hierophant: Who are my teachers?

The Lovers: How do I love?

The Chariot: What’s my next adventure?

Adjustment: How do I find my balance?

The Hermit: How do I find my inner light?

Fortune: Are you ready for good fortune?
