How do I find my inner light?
“The world is full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.”
—William Butler Yeats
Friends -
The Hermit, the universal principle of completion and introspection, asks us this question: How do I find my inner light?
This month, we’re starting the walk towards the darkest time of the year – the Winter Solstice. We can all point to what many of us are also experiencing personally – the dark, difficult places in our world.
How do you work with The Hermit in your life? The Hermit reminds us of two interwoven life strands. The first is to complete unfinished business and to restructure your life in ways more harmonious and aligned with who you are.
The second is to follow what is fundamentally meaningful and heartfelt.
By weaving these two strands together, you are grounded in who you are. And, by being more grounded, you are shining a light on the path ahead – for yourself, others, and the planet.
The climate emergency we're now in is terrifying. As we all work to address the climate change causes and impacts, finding our own lighted path is essential to creating a healthy and just world.

We'll continue to look at each of the 22 Major Arcana cards and some of the questions they invite us to explore. These cards represent universal principles collectively experienced, regardless of our culture or family upbringing, and teach us how, as human beings, we grow, evolve, and deepen. In Elyn’s Diary, we’re exploring our authenticity looking at the Major Arcana cards. The first nine:
The Fool: What does my heart tell me?
The Magus: How do I tell my truth?
The Priestess: How do I trust my intuition?
The Empress: How do I nurture?
The Emperor: How do I lead?
The Hierophant: Who are my teachers?
The Lovers: How do I love?
The Chariot: What’s my next adventure?
Adjustment: How do I find my balance?

The Hermit is in the company of Cerberus, the three-headed dog who guards the entrance to the underworld. The Cerberus represents the part of us that wants to make sure things have been completed (the dog looking backward). We can then initiate and move forward (the two dogs looking ahead. )
The Hermit has set out in search of internal fulfillment and has found the light within. However, the journey inward also has its difficulties. You need to have courage and trust to set out on this inward journey because before you find the light, you go through the danger-filled realms of your own shadow.
To obtain wisdom, you must be prepared to explore your inner world, including the dark, shadowy sides of your own nature, and then make friends with it. Everything must be faced and dealt with so that vulnerabilities can become strengths.
The Hermit walks with the three-headed dog, the temple guardian of the Underworld Goddess, and is a guide through dangerous spaces. He’s walking, so keep moving. Walk the path as your heart beats with life and love.
