How do I love?

The Lovers card, the principle of the art and craft of relationships, asks this question: How do I love? The duality depicted in this card becomes unity through the energy of love, the power of an open and compassionate heart.

As we go deeper into the new year, we'll be facing more uncertainty for our planet and all living beings. So, this question becomes particularly important – how do we become more skilled at loving with compassion and heart?

In the most recent Elyn’s Diary, we began to explore our authenticity with the first six Major Arcana Tarot cards:

The Fool: What does my heart tell me?

The Magus: How do I tell my truth?

The Priestess: How do I trust my intuition?

The Empress: How do I nurture?

The Emperor: How do I lead?

The Hierophant: Who are my teachers?

We'll continue in the months ahead to look at each of the Major Arcana cards and some of the questions they invite us to explore. The 22 cards in the Major Arcana represent universal principles collectively experienced, regardless of our culture or family upbringing. These 22 teachings address how, as human beings, we grow, evolve, and deepen.

In this time of the climate emergency, The Lovers reminds us to work for a healthy and resilient world with compassion and an open heart. The change is in every one of us.

Are you facing a tough choice about a relationship or your authenticity in the world?

Like The Art card (14), The Lovers represents duality but with people, not alchemy. The Lovers card inspires you to unify dual forces. You can bring together two parts seemingly in opposition to one another and create something whole, unified, and harmonious. There is an equal amount of advantage and disadvantage in every choice, opportunity and challenge, positive and negative. When you accept these dualities, you build the unity from which love flows.

The word "love" is subjective and so overused that it has almost lost its true meaning. Nevertheless, we are all capable of the immense power of deep feelings. Love happens when we step out of the darkness of fear, pain, and doubt into our authenticity.

The Lovers is about choice - how you want to love, who you want to be in this lifetime, how you connect with others and on what level, and about what you will and won't stand for. To make authentic choices, you need to be clear about your personal beliefs and values – and stay true to them.

The Lovers card is often a sign that you face a moral or ethical dilemma – consider all consequences – the duality of choices - before acting. Your values are being challenged, and you are called to take the higher path, even if it is difficult. Making decisions based on fear or worry or guilt or shame will get you further into a hole. Now, more than ever, you must choose love and compassion – for yourself, for others, and our planet. Choose the best version of yourself.

The Lovers card reminds you that you don't exist in isolation and that it's through relationships that you can become ever more conscious. The duality depicted in this card becomes unity through the energy of love, the power of an open and compassionate heart.

When you have learned to love and accept the light and shadow within you, you're able to offer that understanding of opposites being part of the same whole to others. As you'll discover, again and again, challenges and conflicts come with embracing this knowing fully, but relationship is the crucible in which growth and evolution can thrive.
